How To Increase Shorthand Speed
How to increased Shorthand Speed has become a common question among students of Shorthand. Almost all Shorthand exams need at least 80 words per minute speed and maximum up to 120 words per minute. However, for the post of Parliamentary Reporter the required Shorthand speed is 140 words per minute and 160 words per minute.
In this Blog I will share with you the technique I followed during my preparation days and I hope this technique will definitely help you in attaining very good Shorthand speed. But before it I would like to clear one confusion from your mind. Many teachers suggest that for a Skill Test of 80 words per minute the candidate should be able to write at 100 words per minute otherwise the candidate will have maximum chances of getting fail. I strongly condemn this statement. It is not important at what speed you are writing, important is how accurately you are able to write. I recommend that for a Skill Test of 80 words per minute the candidate should be able to write at 85-90 words per minute and for a Skill Test of 100 words per minute the candidate should be able to write at 105-110 words per minute, that's it. The important part is how much accuracy the candidate is getting. If accuracy is below 97% then the candidate will definitely feel difficulty in Skill Test. Shorthand is all about accuracy and if you are not able to write accurately then 80 wpm will become 100 wpm for you. The process is simple. Increase Shorthand Speed and Accuracy simultaneously.
First you need to understand the process of Shorthand Practice (homework part).
The biggest mistake students make is that they don't stick to one technique and they follow different techniques suggested by different people at different times. You should stick to one technique and trust your hard-work. It's not a cake walk to attain 80 wpm with 100 per cent accuracy. There are a lot of banners displaying we will train you in that fashion that you will attain 80 wpm in 3 months. Let me tell you the truth. It is all money grabbing cheap technique. Yes, you will attain speed of 80 wpm for not with that much accuracy with which you can crack Shorthand Skill Test. Let us see how you should start Shorthand Magazine after finishing the Basics of Shorthand.
1. Start with Kailash Chandra Volume 1 and finish all 24 Volumes, if possible, in sequence. Hindi Shorthand students can start with Ramdhari.
2. There is no term like Important Volume. It has been observed that students ask for important Volume or some say Volume 19-24 are most important. It is just because of wrong guidance. All Volumes are important and difficulty is also the same, however, some Volumes have 840 words and some other have 1000 words.
3. Start with Transcription No. 01 of Volume 01 and copy it 5 times. After 2 or 3 times of copying you will start learning the passage. That is totally alright. Remember, you need to do all 840 words and not 400 or 600. In the evening fix a time when you'll give its test by taking dictation. You should not change this time because it will give you feel of a shorthand institute where student should reach on time.
4. Visit YouTube Channel of Likho Steno Academy and go to Playlist Section. Here you will get a lot of videos on different topics. You need to open Kailash Chandra Volume 1 and start taking dictation at 70 word per minute. Don't stop anywhere or pause the video if you find difficulty in writing. Don't worry, it happens with everyone.
5. Now you need to read your outlines and match it with original passage. Find out your mistakes. Click Here To Read How To Count Shorthand Mistakes.
6. Once you done with counting mistakes note down all the words you missed or due to which you missed easy words and practice them.
7. Again take dictation of the same transcription and repeat the whole process. Move to Transcription 02 only if you are getting 100 per cent accuracy in Transcription 01. Do only one Transcription a day.
8. Finish at least 2 Volumes at 70 words per minute and then the process of Shorthand Practice/Home-work will be Changed.
