Candidates preparing for SSC Stenographer Exam, DSSSB Stenographer Exam or any other Stenographer Exam have so many shorthand doubts in their minds. Through this Blog I'll try to given answers of questions asked by Stenographers. These Top 10 Shorthand Doubts will be important for you to improve your Shorthand Skills.
Question 1
(a) Sir is there possibility to get gazetted post for a steno and what are the posts like private secretary is gazetted post? Is SSC grade C steno is gazetted post?
(b) Sir tell us about number of posts stage by stage in different departments and organisations?
Answer
Yes, there are possibility to get Gazetted post once you enter Government Service through Stenographer Exam. However, SSC Steno Grade C is non-gazetted. There are many posts which are Gazetted for Stenographer Profile. The list of Non-Gazetted and Gazetted is as follows:-
1. Stenographer Grade - D or Stenographer Grade III (Non-Gazetted) Grade Pay (2400/-)
2. Personal Assistant (PA) or Stenographer Grade II (Non-Gazetted) (4600/-)
3. Private Secretary (PS) (Gazetted) (4800/- & 5400)
4. Principal Private Secretary (PPS) (Gazetted) (6600/-)
5. Senior Principal Private Secretary (PPS) (Gazetted) (7600/-)
6. Principal Staff Officer (PSO) (Gazetted) (8700/-)
Promotions totally depend on the Cadre of the Employee. Cadre restructuring takes place time to time and number of seats for each posts are increased or decreased according to the needs of the Cadre. There is no surety that if an employee joins as Stenographer Grade - D will definitely reach at the level of Sr. PPS or PSO. It has been seen in many departments that Stenographer Grade - D retires at Personal Assistant only.
Question 2
How mistakes are calculated in Delhi District court exam?
Answer
Unlike SSC or DSSSB the
Shorthand Skill test is not of qualifying nature. Marks are given according to mistakes made in Shorthand Skill Test. A detailed post on mistake calculation will be shared in further Blogs. Candidates are advised to focus more on accuracy because the number of mistakes you make will lead you get less marks in Shorthand Skill test. And final merit includes marks of Shorthand Skill Test as well.
Question 3
Tell us about you sir, your office, passion, thoughts about stenography, your motivation.
Answer
Sharing all details won't be possible but I will definitely share what I can. I have been working for Central Government for 6 years. Initially worked as a Contractual Employee but I always wanted to get into Government Service and after hard-work of a few years I managed to crack DSSSB Stenographer Exam but I switched to Central Government for some reasons. My passion is Cricket, Music and Philanthropy. I love to help as many people as I can. I have toiled hard to get Government Service and I don't want others to waste their time in getting information of Good Study Material and Techniques to crack Government Exams. My thoughts about Stenography are very simple. It is a language which gave me means of livelihood. I had always one point clear in my mind, if I love this language then this language will definitely love me and same happened. I am what I am today all because of this beautiful language. Failures are my motivation no matter which field it is. I have this thing in my mind that if I don't try today, I'll have to live with guilt that I should have tried it at least for once.

(h) How to maintain steno means/practice dictations at home?
Answer
Routine cannot be same for all aspirants. You will have to find out the best way to practice. A teacher can only suggest you techniques. If you are not employed anywhere then you should do at least 2 dictations s a day if you are a beginner and if you are already at good speed then you should do at least 6 dictations a day and transcribe at least 2 of them. All students are advised to read each and every matter which they write because the more you read the better. For detailed information on this topic you may watch this video:-
Question 5
(a) Tell us about the correct balance between written exam practice and shorthand exam practice. Please consider all those who have speed of 60,70,80 etc. Some say everyday practice 1 dictation along with transcription some say gain a speed of at least 70 and then stop the practice until you clear the written and after that start again in the time gap of 6-7 months and then gain a speed of 80/100 whatever the case maybe.. You tell us as per your knowledge what is the correct pattern of practicing Eng, Reasoning, GS and also the English shorthand.
(b) Sir aap SSC pre Ki tyari ke liye Tips Dijiye.
Answer
If you want to prepare for Written Examination and Shorthand Skill test simultaneously then you should divide your day in two parts. One for Written Examination and second for Shorthand Skill Test. It is never recommended that you stop doing shorthand after attaining 70 words per minute speed. You will be good at shorthand only when you practice it daily. (c) Sir agar it ki jagha at type ho Jata hai to kinti mistake hogi?
(d) Sir how to maintain speed with accuracy and please guide for comma also?
Answer
There is no mistake for using backspace and correcting the wrongly typed spelling. You can use backspace as many times as you want. There must be some other mistake. May be you skipped a line or some words but using backspace is not counted as mistake. If you type AT in place of IT then one full mistake will be counted. You can read the detailed Blog on Calculation of Shorthand Mistakes:-
Question 7
Sir, I would like to thank you for all your efforts. Sir, I want to ask you something how many dictations I should take for MEA, at the present moment my accuracy in seen passages(I only practice highlighted word and after that I take my dictation) is 3 per cent. Please guide me and please provide some more short outlines and phrases.
Answer
Whether it is Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) or any other Ministry/Department the number of dictations which you need to practice is same. If one candidate gets 1 per cent errors in Shorthand Skill test and the other candidate gets 5 per cent errors, there will be no difference between them because SSC Stenographer Skill Test is of qualifying nature. For MEA or any desired Ministry/Department, you should try to get high marks in Written Examination. I suggest every student should focus more on seen matters because they will help in attaining good speed and accuracy in Unseen matters. If I am not wrong you want to say you accuracy is 97 per cent and you are getting 3 per cent mistakes. I expect 0 per cent error on Seen matters. If you are at home try to write at least 4 seen dictations a day and read all of them. You should also write at least 6 unseen dictations a day and transcribe at least 2 of them. Focus more on accuracy rather than speed.
Question 8
Sir, what to do for new words?
Answer
For new words you should practice more matters because if you are having problem in words which are from English Language then there is no way better than practice. You should skip them in first attempt so that you don't ruin your other easy words due to one tough word. Once you master this technique you should start making initials of that tough word. Gradually you will learn to tackle any word in which you feel difficulty and Shorthand will be very easy for you. If you are having problem in proper nouns then don't worry the same method will work, however, you should like the initials with any personality and remember it. This technique takes time but it is very useful.
Question 9
Sir at least how many kc volume should I finish for appearing any exam skill test for 80 wpm?
Answer
There is no specific number of Volumes you should finish. Important is how accurately you are writing. I recommend at least 8-10 Volumes and keeping in view the changing trend of Skill Tests candidate should do different kinds of matters. You can get President's Speeches, Prime Minister's Speeches, Editorial & Previous year Dictations from Likho Steno Academy YouTube Channel. Click Here to Visit YouTube Channel.
